REINFORCING THE USE OF POSITIVE DISCIPLINE IN SCHOOLS- REMINDER
Management has observed through monitoring visits that about 38% of teachers in the Ghana Education Service/Right To Play Partner Schools continue to use corporal and inappropriate punishment such as canning, insulting and spanking for misconduct of school children.
Management therefore writes to remind all teachers to be guided by the Safe School Concept, the Code of Conduct for Ghana Education Service Staff (2017) and the Children’s Act, 1998 (Act, 560) to end all forms of violence against the school child.
We also recommend the following guidelines and actions to eliminate corporal punishment in schools:
i. Each Headteacher trains all teachers on the Safe School Positive Discipline Handbook and application of play-based approaches and the Ghana Education Service Code of Conduct.
ii. Each Headteacher is expected to record any incidence of corporal punishment according to section 2 (Managing Your School) of the Head Teacher’s Handbook.
iii. Each Headteacher urges all teachers to display non-violent and appropriate classroom rules, and positive discipline measures agreed with students.
iv. Each Headteacher facilitates the sensitisation of all students on reporting procedures on incidences on corporal and degrading punishment to the Guidance and Counselling Teacher/ Unit or other free, confidential helpline for children.
v. Notifying all Partner Schools about the Right To Play proposed annual award system that will go to the best performing schools that fully implement all the Positive Discipline measures.
