Stop GES-SIC deductions

STOP THE GES-SIC DEDUCTION IMPOSED ON 2021 NEWLY RECRUITED TEACHERS NOW- INFORMED TEACHERS NETWORK

It is worth stating for the records that, Signing up for an insurance policy was and is still optional.

The information available showed that GHS10 is being deducted from the salaries of the 2021 newly recruited teachers for the Subsidized GES-SIC life group insurance policy. This, we found to be unlawful and unacceptable.

GES-SIC DEDUCTION IMPOSED ON 2021 NEWLY RECRUITED TEACHERS AND PERMITTED DEDUCTIONS BY THE LAWS OF GHANA

Legally, the only deductions permissible without the teacher’s permission are SNNIT, Income Tax, and Union dues. Any other deductions aside, this must be mandated by the teacher. What we struggle to understand is why GES is desperately and illegally imposing this SIC deduction on teachers.

We know It is subsidized, we were also made aware that it’s the government’s goodwill initiative. That’s fine, but it is still illegal to deduct without teachers’ written approval according to Act 631 of the labour Act, Section 70.

It can be recalled that In September 2018, the whole country was thrown into chaos when GHS10 was deducted from the salary of teachers for some reasons.

This was a clear breach of the labour Act 2003(Act 631) section 70. This saw teachers rising against the illegality and the deduction was later suspended in August 2018 and teachers who wish to opt out were asked to fill an exit form through the teacher unions and a refund was made to that effect to those who signed out.

GES-SIC DEDUCTION IMPOSED ON 2021 NEWLY RECRUITED TEACHERS AND THE DECISIONS OF THE PAST DO NOT AGREE

The complaints of teachers with regards to the deduction of GES-SIC premiums and the decisions reached were expected to prevent SIC from taking similar actions against new teachers.

We thought that was the end but, unfortunately, between that time and now, some few teachers still complain about the deductions appearing on their payslips. And now, all newly recruited teachers of 2021 have been signed up to it automatically.

We still can’t fathom why GES/Government is bent on perpetuating this illegality. We are by this communique calling on GES/Government/SIC to do the right thing. If it is an error, it should be corrected with immediate alacrity and the monies refunded. We are also calling on the teacher unions to help us get this done.

Signed
