Each learner differs in his or her approach to learning, or how s/he wants instruction to be presented.
And since Differentiated Instruction (modeling or remodeling instruction to meet individual learning needs) is a significant philosophy of how to think about teaching, learning and learners based on the premise that teachers should, and can adapt instruction to learners’ differences, with a core aim of making content, process, product and environment flexible, it is practically wise to consider learning styles.
In the role of the aforementioned, we can assume the existence of six different learner types in our classrooms. Below are these learner types and brief details on how and what they respond to best.
1. Visual Learners
Visual learners learn best by looking. They enjoy reading (and often prefer to see the words they are learning) and seeing pictures.
2. Auditory Learners
Auditory learners learn best by listening. They work well with spoken instruction and learn quickly by listening.
3. Tactile Learners
Tactile learners learn physically by touching and manipulating objects. Without this, they won’t internalize new vocabulary/structures easily.
4. Kinesthetic Learners
Kinesthetic learners learn physically by moving around and using their bodies. They are variants of tactile learners.
5. Analytic Learners
Analytic Learners focus on the details and specifics of language, such as grammar rules. They engage in dividing concepts into elements and principles.
6. Global Learners
Global learners focus on the whole picture and do not care so much about specific details.
Now, this very activity was to create a logical link between the concrete form and the idealized form of number operations.
And why it mattered most was that I had to adapt the lesson on the spot because I realized some were having trouble understanding and/ loosing interest.
Finally, the process ensured that what the learners were learning, how they learnt it, and how they demonstrated what they had learnt was a match for the learners’ readiness level, interests and preferred mode of learning.
